MMUN – Montessori Model United Nations

Dear GISS community,

we would like to introduce the new team of students which will participate in the MMUN Conference in March 2020 in NYC.

After a successful start with our first team in March 2019 these interested and committed students are in preparation for the conference which is structured li-ke a role play. Every student has to act like a delegate of the UN and is representing a specific country. The students work in a team and each team has to pre-pare two different topics.

This year the countries they have to represent are Senegal, Finland and Georgia. The topics are very different and realistic because the MMUN Organisation chose topics which were actually discussed in UN conferences in the past.

To give you and idea how complex and challenging the tasks are, we would like to give you some examples: Improving the Coordination of Efforts Against Trafficking in Persons, Nuclear Disarmament, Elimination of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, Combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, etc.

The students are working hard on the research part for the different topics to finish their position paper which is expected by the MMUN. The organisation would like to make sure that the students have the knowledge to discuss these difficult topics on a high level.

Here are some comments of students made during their workshop time indicating what is motivating them to participate here:

„ It is the curiosity about the topic and I am looking forward to the trip!“

„I get new ideas about topics that I have not really come across before.“

„I am looking forward to improving my skills in public speaking!“

„I didn‘t know anything about my topic when I started but now I know a lot.“

„The challenge is to finish the position paper and to hold a speech in front of others!“

We are looking forward to work with the students and to prepare them for this challenging conference. If you have any questions feel free to keep in touch with the students and ask them or contact us teachers. We will keep you posted,

The MMUN Team
