Assessment

& tracking of student progress in the IB

All subjects are graded on a scale from 7 (excellent) to 1 (poor). Up to three additional points are awarded for the student’s performance in TOK and the Extended Essay.

The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance across the whole programme and to satisfactory participation in the creativity, action, service requirement. The highest total that a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points.

Students sit written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.

In preparation for final exams, all IB students at the German International School Sydney sit rigorous mock exams three times during the two-year programme. Student progress is tracked continuously and formally reported at the end of each quarter.
